On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that India will not compromise on the interests of farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen. He emphasized his unwavering support for these communities, likening his stance to a protective wall.
This statement comes at a crucial time as the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between India and the United States sees Washington demanding tariff concessions in the agricultural and dairy sectors. To exert pressure, the U.S. has imposed significant tariffs on India.
Defending Agricultural Interests
During his address on the 79th Independence Day, Modi reiterated his commitment to standing against any detrimental policies affecting farmers, fishermen, and livestock owners. He made it clear that India will never accept any unfavorable agreements regarding these groups.
The proposed BTA includes U.S. requests to lower tariffs on products such as corn, soybeans, apples, almonds, and ethanol, along with increased access for American dairy products. However, New Delhi has strongly opposed these demands, citing their potential negative impact on farmers.
Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups
Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the remarkable achievements of women's self-help groups (SHGs), stating that they have transitioned from marginalization to becoming key players in entrepreneurship and exports. In his Independence Day speech, he noted that their products are now reaching international markets, generating significant revenue.
He remarked, "No one paid attention to women's self-help groups, but over the past decade, they have accomplished incredible feats." Modi emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for local talent and removing barriers, proudly mentioning India's growing toy exports.
Celebrating 100 Years of RSS
In his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi commemorated the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), expressing national pride in the organization's service to the country. He referred to the RSS as the world's largest NGO, which continues to inspire.
He stated, "A hundred years ago, an organization was born, the RSS... A century of service to the nation is a remarkable achievement. Countless volunteers have dedicated their lives to the welfare of Mother India, aiming for nation-building from individual development." Modi paid tribute to all volunteers who contributed to the RSS's century-long journey.
